Dividend Income Update- January 2016

Another month has passed by, and it’s time for me to post the dividends that Skyy earned in the month of January. It’s hard to argue the success of long-term dividend growth investing when you can slowly and surely see dividend income rise over time and get closer to covering your family expenses.

Once again I hope these monthly dividend income reports provide inspiration for any investors out there that are just starting out. It shows that it’s possible to one day pay for monthly expenses with dividends, which would provide an investor opportunities and freedom to pursue other interests than full-time work.

January 2016 Dividends Received

  • General Electric (GE) – $7.04
  • Eletro Rent (ELRC) – $12.81
  • Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU) – $5.68
  • Cisco (CSCO) – $2.15
  • Chimera (CIM) –  $10.26
  • Philip Morris (PM) – $2.06
  • Walmart (WMT) – $1.47
  • Realty Income (O) – $3.94

Total dividends received during the month of January: $45.41

I’m truly thankful that Skyy was able to earn $45 this month without lifting a finger and continuing to be a great daughter. She did nothing to earn this money except for make great decisions with past capital. Decisions like investing in high quality companies that reward her as a loyal shareholder with a piece of the profit.

My goal was for Skyy to receive $50 in dividend income in one month during the year of 2015. Currently we have not reached that mark, but hopefully it can be accomplished in 2016! This $50 mark has been a hard one to fill but will be defeated hopefully sooner than later.

Work Hard or Work Smart?

Full Disclosure: Skyy is long all stocks above

  1. DM,

Thanks for sharing your dividend income for the month of January. I’ll be posting my own January results soon as well. I’m not quite to the point where yours are yet and mine are nowhere near as split up as yours so I’m sure to have months much slower than yours. That is the definite benefit of your portfolio having such a split between stocks. You may pay more in trade fees for so many splits but at least it is split up between the months so it’s more even over the year’s spread.

I know that your goal is to eventually end up at $50 per month in dividend income for 2015 and that you’re past that and have ultimately not achieved what you were hoping for but hopefully that doesn’t deter you from continuing to strive forward and get it done in 2016! After all, a goal not reached is another way of saying you just haven’t gotten it YET.

Good luck this year in 2016!

  2. DM,
No problem and hope to see yours soon! When the market got smacked last year in August I just had to pick up some positions that took a hit, hence the reason why you see a lot of purchases of 2-6 shares. Honestly I need to start adding to my existing companies instead of adding new ones.

Yes that $50 mark is killing Skyy and I. haha but we will get it sometime in the future and hopefully it will be in 2016! lol Thanks again for the encouragement and yes let’s pray for a great 2016!

  3. Nice job. You almost hit $50 in dividends. Do you DRIP all of your dividends or hold and make purchases once you have a set amount in your account?

  4. IH,
Thanks and hopefully Skyy and I can do it sooner than later! Currently I DRIP them back into their own stock. I might switch it when the dividends average over $100 a month, but time will tell.

  5. Thanks for sharing your recent results. Keep that passive income rolling in from more stable and reliable dividend payers. There are still quite a few really high yielding companies that look a little dangerous to me. I see we have a couple names in common for January. Look forward to your next update.

  6. DH,

Thanks and yes I need to switch back to more safer yields but I should be ok still in my 20’s have plenty of time to recover if need be. Can’t wait for my results for Feb. to arrive.

Thanks again for stopping by and here’s to a great 16K even though today the market is below 16K today!
